Built on Servo / early development

Building a browser on Servo.

GalileoEngine is the Servo-based engine layer behind Galileo Browser. We are turning Servo’s development shell into a desktop browser, one tested piece at a time.

Where we are now

It builds and runs. It is not ready for daily use.

We can build the current desktop shell and test selected browsing tasks. Compatibility, security, accessibility, packaging, and updates still need substantial work before we can offer a public release.

How the project fits together

Servo provides the engine. We build the browser around it.

Servo, GalileoEngine, and Galileo Browser are three parts of the same technical path. Each has a different job.

Upstream foundation
01

Servo

The independent Rust web engine that provides our starting point.

Derived engine

GalileoEngine

Our engine layer for integration, compatibility work, and browser features.

First product
03

Galileo Browser

The desktop browser we are building for people to use.

GalileoEngine is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Servo. Reusable engine improvements should be contributed upstream whenever practical.

What we are working on

The work between Servo and a usable browser.

Our job is to connect the engine to a complete desktop experience and test the result honestly.

01

Keep up with Servo

Stay close enough to upstream that useful fixes can move both ways and updates remain practical.

02

Build the missing browser pieces

Connect navigation, storage, media, permissions, profiles, and desktop integration into one product.

03

Test before we release

Compatibility, security, privacy, accessibility, stability, installation, and updates all need to work together.

What works today

What we can show today.

These checks help us track progress. They are not a claim that Galileo Browser is ready for general use.

Working

Development build & launch

The current desktop shell builds and launches in our development environment.

Not a signed installer or public release.
Started

Core browsing journeys

We repeat selected checks for rendering, navigation, search, and back navigation.

Not a broad real-site compatibility result.
Partial

Compatibility & media probes

We are testing selected WebDriver, browser API, cache, and media paths.

Many standards, media, security, and accessibility areas remain unqualified.

Roadmap

Where we go from here.

The next steps move from a reproducible development build toward a secure, accessible, maintainable browser.

  1. Now

    Foundation & browser baseline

Reproducible builds, a clear capability inventory, and dependable core checks.

    In progress
  2. Next

    Compatibility & hardening

Broader standards coverage, real-site reliability, accessibility, privacy, security, and media support.

    Planned
  3. Then

    Packaging & release preparation

Installers, updates, recovery, stability, performance, and release checks.

The product

Galileo Browser is what people will use.

GalileoEngine does the engine work underneath. Galileo Browser turns it into a desktop experience with tabs, profiles, settings, downloads, and the other parts people expect.

Browser product / in development

Galileo Browser

A desktop browser built on GalileoEngine.

It is still in development and there is no public download yet. The roadmap shows what works and what remains.
